From what I understand, wild rabbits give birth to their babies in nest stops -- small underground burrows. The rabbit may completely close-off the burrow for most of the day, and dig in and out to feed the babies twice a day or so.
When you find baby rabbits or hares outdoors, it's usually best to leave them alone, even if you can't see a parent around (they're probably just out getting food or hiding from you).
