It can be dangerous to travel with your rabbit, but sometimes it's the best or only option. If you're going to travel with your bunny, you should take all possible measures to ensure his or her safety and comfort.

If you're traveling short distances (like to the vet's, or the cottage), you just need a pet carrier. There are carriers made specially for rabbits, but you can also use a cat/dog carrier.

  • Don't use a cardboard box because the rabbit can eat or dig its way out.
  • Don't use chicken wire, because the rabbit can bite through it - and cut itself up in the process.
  • For comfort, put a soft blanket or towel in the carrier - but only if the rabbit doesn't eat it (if he starts to nibble, take it out).
  • Put hay in the carrier for the bunny to nibble on
  • Maybe put a grass mat in the carrier, or cardboard roll (from inside toilet paper or paper towel), or some other toy
  • Maybe bring along a portable water feeder, and/or a small healthy treat (like a chunk of carrot or apple)
  • Bring things to clean up messes (paper towels, cloths, maybe spray bottle with vinegar)

If you're traveling long distances:

  • Do in-depth research about each so you can weigh your options, and thoroughly prepare for the one you chose.
  • Have contact information (vets, etc.) and supplies ready at all stages of the trip in case of emergency.
  • Get the bunny a complete physical exam and thumbs-up from a "rabbit-savvy" vet.

By Airplane

  • Not all airlines allow rabbits in the cabin
  • Shipping the bunny in freight is an absolutely last ditch option, because it's very dangerous
  • Even in the cabin, there are risks involved - further research required!

By Car

  • Choose a carrier wisely. You want it to be as comfortable as possible, without sacrificing safety. Prepare a spot for litter (urinating, defecating).
  • Bring an exercise pen that you can set up where possible - always consider safety, but maybe in places like hotel rooms, isolated camp or park grounds, etc.
  • Plan lots of stops, because this trip will take much longer than if you were alone. The bunny needs out to exercise, relax, drink water, eat, play, snuggle with you, etc. - and at appropriate times of day (morning, evening - rabbits are crepuscular).
  • Bring way more supplies than you'll need, in case something unexpected happens.

Are pet rabbits allowed on planes?

Different airlines have different rules about how they handle live animals. Some airlines would allow the rabbit to travel in the cargo hold, but this is not very safe for the rabbit. Some airlines allow dogs and cats to travel in carrying cases in the passenger areas of the plane, but I don't know about rabbits.

How do animal move of rabbit?

Rabbits, like several other animals, have powerful hind legs. But unlike other animals, they use these to travel primarily by hopping. Because their hind legs are much longer than the front ones, rabbits can travel uphill more effectively than downhill. United Nations Farms

Would it be possible to bring my outdoor rabbits inside and keep them in their travel containers overnight or would it be too cramped for them?

Well rabbits are nocturnal animals which means they are most active at night. Why are you bringing them in? Because of the cold? You can bring them in for a short period of time, depending on the size of the rabbit and the size of the travel carrier. I would not do it for more than a couple of nights, however. I have traveled with rabbits (30 or more) and brought them into the motel room because of the weather. They are VERY noisy at night and I didn't get much sleep. They must have water and feed in their travel carriers.
