For dogs, they may see you as scared depending on body movement and the showing of teeth. Standing tall above your dog and "barking" back at them should they bark or growl at you will stop them from thinking you are scared.
P.S. The showing of teeth can be combined with other actions to prove your dominance. If your dog respects you it will drop eye contact and walk off almost immediately.
