I live in Florida. Before I had Argentine ants (little black ants, bazillions of them) I had Fire ants. Fire ants are not very nice Ants since they bite and like to wait until several hundred of them are halfway up your pant leg so one of them can give the signal so they can all bite at the same time. I don't see any way of getting rid of these little guys, but I can say that since they showed up, the Fire Ants are GONE. The Argentine Ants are the Fire Ants enemy and did a fine job of wiping them out.

Why don't ants normally form super colony?
Most species of ants defend their nests against other ants, whether of the same species or not. As a rule they keep away from strange nests and can tell their own nest by the way it smells different from strange nests.
