How do you convince your parent to get you a dog?

Prove your responsibility and ability to care for a dog.

Failing that, cry.

OR try not to give up. Talk to your parents about a Christmas or Birthday present. Or you can even try to help pay for your loving pooch. If you want lots of information on dogs, go on discoverychannel.com and look up DOGS 101 and they give you videos on many breeds and even getting a dog. When you are ready or want to show your parents a picture and say "how can you say no to that cute little face" go on petfinder.com and look for an adorable little puppy, or even elder dog.

Another approach would be to contact a local animal shelter, and volunteer if possible on a regular basis. Get down and dirty regarding the care of dogs, and stay with it. This may convince your parents that you are serious about dogs, and that you are not going to turn the dog's care over to them (their greatest fear) when you grow tired of it. Dogs are worth the effort, but they are a lot of work, work that your parents DO NOT want to take on.

You need to show that you are responsible for taking care of a dog. If you aren't your dog will die or your parents will have to do it. I suggest you get a small animal to show them that you can do it before you get a dog. Get a hamster or a bird.
