Chipmunks don't generally infest the upper structure of buildings. They prefer ground boroughs or holes into your cellar. However, squirrels prefer the top level in a structure. They tend towards warm attics, or can live in walls. Check your houses sophets for any cracks or separation points that they may have gotten in through, although they can chew through nearly anything if they are determined enough.
Tell tale signs of a squirrel or chipmunk infestation:
Little rice, tic-tac or mike-n-ike size feces- dark brown to black in color.
Holes in bags.
Chewed carpeting.
Vibrant pungent yellow urine.
It is also possible that you might have a raccoon or opossum infestation. These creatures aren't just more clever, but more dangerous. I wouldn't advise attempting to treat an infestation yourself.
Keep your eyes peeled for signs of pests and alert animal control.
I could be a squirrel taking refuge in your attic during the winter. Or it could be a rat.;-)
because they live in our attic. we just trapped a flying squirrel in our attic.
To access the attic, typically you would need to locate the attic door or access panel in your home. This is usually found on the upper floor of the house and can be opened to reveal a set of stairs or ladder leading up to the attic space. It's important to take precautions when entering the attic, such as using a flashlight and wearing appropriate clothing.
Squirrels and rats generally do not cohabitate in the same space, as they are territorial and may compete for resources. If there is an infestation of both squirrels and rats in an attic, it is likely due to separate incidences of invasion rather than intentional cohabitation. Professional pest control measures are recommended to address such infestations.
Gray squirrels are part of the Sciuridae family, which includes various squirrel species such as red squirrels, fox squirrels, and flying squirrels. They are all characterized by their rodent-like appearance, bushy tails, and habit of storing food for the winter.
