If the fins are (or were) long and elaborate, with long ventral fins and a full "ruff" when it flares, its a boy. You can get short-tailed boys though, in the wild the two sexes look near identical (it's humans who bred them to have long-fins, not so they can attract a mate as someone else said).

All females are short tailed with a rounded anal fin, short ventral fins, a shorter ruff when they flare and a small white spot on the underside of their belly called an oviposter.
