A cow is a mature female bovine. You can tell by looking for the udder between the hind legs. The udder is a large pendulous sack with four teats presented in a square-like formation hanging below. A cow will also urinate out the back end.

There no boy cows or girl cows. A cow is just a cow, and they are always female.

To tell a cow a part from a bull, also look between the legs, but also look at the base of the belly. With bulls (and steers) you will see a hairy prepuce hanging down which is where the penis is housed, and comes out when the bull is about to mate with a cow. Bulls and steers also urinate from this area.

A bull will have a football-like sac hanging down between his back legs with a pair of testicles inside, seen by the two oval "balls" that make up the visible male gonads. Unlike with the cow, the whole organ is more narrower and has a much smaller neck at the base, and doesn't look as much like a bag or sack.
