Angry Rabbit

• Thumping: Rabbits might thump their feet to show their negative feelings -- annoyance, frustration, anger. This is different from the scared kind of thump; when they're angry, they might thump again and again as they jump around, acting agitated.
• Lunging: A sudden movement towards you with the head up, tail up and ears back is a very clear form of rabbit communication: an unmistakable threat. Interpretation: "I don't like that, back off!" The rabbit is threatening to attack you.
• Grunting, growling, snorting, hissing: Bunnies might grunt right before they lunge, or they might just growl once to say "that's enough!", or they might growl and run away from you, or do short grunts every now and again as they thump their feet. Bunnies grunt as a warning to stay away: it just means they want to be left alone. These kinds of noises communicate varied stages of anger, stress, or feeling threatened.
• Attacking: Biting and scratching -- it really hurts! Rabbits attacking each other can quickly do deadly damage to each other, so never let them fight!
• Running away, hiding
• Soft squeal or whimper: Mild annoyance or displeasure.

Happy RabbitA happy rabbit will let you pet it without showing fear. A happy rabbit is eating, hopping around, jumping, playing with its toys, eating hay, letting you pet it, grooming itself, etc.

• "Binkies": A binky is when the rabbit jumps really high in the air and flicks its back legs and tail or twists its body around mid-air. A binkying bunny is a really happy bunny just having fun. Interpretation: "Life is Great! I'm so Happy!"
• Sprinting: Bunnies usually sprint when they are really excited. A sprint is when the rabbit runs really, really fast, then stops, then runs really, really fast again. This is sometimes called the "Bunny 500." (A happy sprint is not the same as a scared rabbit being chased!)
• Clicking teeth: This kind of tooth chatter is subtle, quiet, gentle, soft, rhythmic, and sounds almost like a cat purring. (This is not the same as tooth grinding, a sign of pain/anger.) Usually, a rabbit will chatter his teeth in a happy, content manner while you are petting him. His eyes might be closed.
• Licking: A happy rabbit might give you kisses to show she likes you. A bunny that licks you has fully accepted you and is showing you affection. Interpretation: "I like you."
• Flopping, "melting": A content rabbit that is sitting still or grooming, or that has been having fun and running around, may suddenly flop onto its side and lay still. Owners often fear something dire has happened, but it is a sign of utter relaxation. Interpretation: "Oh, I'm just so relaxed and satisfied!" Other times, the rabbit may "melt into a puddle" and completely flatten out on the ground -- this is a less extreme version of the same feeling: total contentment.
• Circling your feet: A rabbit that follows you around circling your feet may just be trying to get your attention, but more likely your rabbit is sexually mature and is courting you (especially if accompanied by soft honking or oinking noises). Interpretation: Usually, "I'm in love with you," which means it is time to get bunny spayed or neutered; but, sometimes simply means "Here I am, let's play."

Scared RabbitA scared rabbit might seek shelter. Rabbits might also poop or pee out of nervousness. A scared rabbit's eyes will be wide open ("bugged out" in appearance).

• Thumping: The rabbit is not completely terrified, but thinks there is danger nearby and is communicating a warning to other rabbits (or, as the case may be, to the humans in the room). It can make a surprisingly loud noise! This kind of thump is different from the anger kind of thump; when the rabbit is scared it will stand completely still, its ears perked up, its attitude alert; its tail may be raised (but a raised tail may accompany an angry thump, too).
• Screaming: When a rabbit is in mortal terror, it might scream; it might also scream out of sudden, extreme pain. (Do not ignore this! Reassure your rabbit and bring it to a vet unless you know for sure that whatever scared your rabbit didn't hurt it.)
• Flat Rabbit: When a rabbit flattens itself on its belly with its head down and ears held very flat, he or she is frightened and is trying to blend into his or her surroundings. The rabbit may also be acting this way to mime fear, as a sign of submission (as in, she knows it's time to go back in her crate, and she knows she's being naughty and running away from you, but now she's ready to obey). This is different from "melting," a sign of contentment where the body has relaxed muscles and a relaxed facial expression.

Other Emotions

• Teeth Grinding: Loud teeth grinding is a sign of pain or discomfort, and your rabbit will often also be tense or hunched up when this occurs. Interpretation: "Ooh, I'm in pain and I don't feel good!" (This also means a trip to the vet is in order as soon as possible.) One user reported this kind of tooth grinding as a sign of anger.
• Chin Rubbing: You may witness your rabbit rubbing its chin on objects or even people. Rabbits have scent glands on their chins that they use to scent-mark territories and objects (the scent is not detectable by people, though, it's strictly for rabbit communication). Interpretation: "This is mine!"
• Soft honking or oinking: Communicates sexual interest. If your rabbit is circling you and honking, it is time for neutering.
