How do you scientists use rocks and fossils to understand age and geological history?

Aside from carbon-14, rocks that can be radiometrically dated are mostly igneous and metamorphic rocks. most sedimentary rocks cannot be dated by this method. this is because many sedimentary rocks are made up of particles eroded from older rocks. dateing these pieces only gives the age of the preexisting rock from which it came.

∙ 10y agoSuperposition is the term that describes the relating the age of a layer of rock by comparing it to the age of a layer above it. New rock is superpositioned over old rock. Geologists work backwards from present with this assumption. Fossils are found in those layers that help the geologists to index the layers when there is a discontinuity. If a geologist knows when an animal or plant became extinct the geologist knows that the rock is earlier than that date if the fossil of that animal is in it.
