You really shouldn't try to separate them when they are tied. They will eventually "come apart" on their own. If the tie is lasting over an hour you can push their rear ends together (towards each other) and hold them there. It may help relieve the tension that is keeping the bulb of the males penis enlarged and he will slip out.
