The story changes depending on the imagination of the creator. There are so many different stories that you could probably create an entire dictionary.
-A single bite will turn you,
-Simply drinking the blood of a vampire.
-Draining your blood till on the verge of death then gives you their blood in return
-Sucking your soul out and keeping it in their body. So long as that soul is alive, your body will live.
So you see, there are many different ideas on how to make a vampire. Stick with Dracula's version.

That depends on who wrote the story. In most legends and modern treatments, though, biting a vampire (presumably in the fashion they bite you... to get blood) is part of the transition from victim into Vampire. In the Southern Vampire series, though, Vampire Blood has specific, valuable traits that make it a powerful drug and healing agent.

A vampire might have a large, intimidating breed like a Doberman Pinscher or a Rottweiler to protect them and instill fear in others. Alternatively, a vampire could have a mysterious and elegant breed like a Greyhound or a Borzoi to match their style.
Darla is the first Vampire in BTVS. She appears in th first season and is killed by Angel whom she sired. She is then brought back to life in the spin off show Angel, but is re-sired by Drusilla who is her grandaughter( as Angel sired Spike Who Sired Drusilla). She then dusts herself to enable her human child to live.
Angel (Angelus) sired (turned into a vampire) Drusilla who in turn sired Spike (William). Spike traveled with Drusilla, Angel, and Darla around the 1880's. So essentially Angel has always been aware that Spike was a vampire.
