We just heard a lady that was in a Monark butterfly club last Thru. She spoke at the St Joe, MO water garder club Aug Meeting. She told us that the male had two black spots near the ribs on its wings. These are sent glands that make them more actractive to the females. Paul Deatz Member of the St Joe Water garden club
The national insect of the US is the monarch butterfly.
The Texas state insect is the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). It was designated as the state insect in 1995 due to its significance as a migratory species and its beauty. The Monarch butterfly is known for its distinctive orange and black patterned wings.
A butterfly with a name starting with the letter v is the Viceroy butterfly. It resembles the Monarch butterfly but i has a black line that crosses its wings.
yes !!! they do eat milk weed I'm a animals expert so I know (and I'm only 9 years old!!!! Amazing!!) That would be the caterpillars of the monarch butterfly. They use the toxins of the milkweed to become toxic themselves so predators steer clear of them. The butterfly is toxic, too.
Both Monarchs and Viceroy are equally poisonous to birds and other predators. This was not discovered until 1991, when entymologists examined the Batesian theory of mimicry and discovered that the Viceroy is also poisonous. The mimicry is possibly by both species - they are able to double up on predator recognition. If you have any other butterfly questions, e-mail them to me @ liviebug97@yahoo.com. I'd be more than happy to answer them for you!
