Much of the vegetation consumed by gorilas is composed of cellulose and other fibrous materials. The gorilla relies on microbes that colonise the gut to break this material down and synthesize sugars, amino acids, vitamins and fats. It is these nutrients that sustain the gorilla.

Without these microbes the gorilla would starve. Even with these microbes, gorillas have limited energy, and are not particularly mobile. Because the plants they eat are not very energy dense, gorillas spend much of their waking day eating.
