In general, "smarter" species do have larger brains - however the relationship between brain size and intelligence is not as widely accepted as it once was. The presence of a larger brain does not automatically mean the animal is smarter or more likely to survive.

The evolution of Homo sapiens (humans) involved many successive increases in brain size, which corresponded with increased "intelligence". However, the overall body size was also increasing.

It is believed that brain size does affect intelligence, but is only one of many factors.

The brain is the seat of intelligence in any intelligent animal, human beings included. How the brain affects intelligence depends on the animal and how the brain is specialized for that animal's survival.

For example, a bat cannot solve algebraic equations. However, a bat is able to use sonar to map its environment very accurately; a bat can pinpoint the location of a tiny insect using nothing but reflected sound. Such an ability is possible with the humble bat brain because of specialization.

In humans, the convoluted surface of the cerebral cortex has given rise to advanced intelligence. Instead of a "flat"-looking brain, humans' brains look like walnuts, with many folds that reveal a surface area much beyond the interior surface area of the skull. In other words, the human brain has a specialized structure that allows for a lot more 'brain' than our heads could fit otherwise. Thus, the limitation of skull volume is overcome, allowing for more neurons and neuronal connections. Thus, the structure of our brains directly affects our intelligence.

Today on Facebook, I watched a video of a wild bird feeding koi fish in an outdoor pond. This past winter, another video shows a dog repeatedly sledding down a snowy hill and running back up dragging his sled behind him. Gorillas were taught to use sign language to communicate with humans. Videos show dogs and cats Skateboarding...

In these examples, each has different sized brains, but have developed unusual skills. Each task shows different kinds of intelligence.

In less than 20 minutes. In addition, it is a neurotoxin that will eventually reduce your brain's functioning permanently, not only in terms of intelligence, but other functions as well.

Does brain size determine intellectual ability?

Well, to a degree I guess so. An eastern bluebird will not have the intelligence of a German sherpard. A white tail deer will not thave the intelligence of a human. But between animals of the same species, brain size is not a consideration.

Structure of mammalian brain plus intelligence?
