He doesn't attack him after the first time. Because the first time Spirit Bear attacked him Cole was a threat, later in the book, Cole understands that for Spirit Bear to trust him he can't threaten Spirit Bear.
He Learns to Trust
He learns that he broke it's trust because he tried to capture it. He realizes how many peoples' trusts he had broken. He also learns that the beaver is calm, it can make dams that block whole rivers, just by using his two front teeth. Hope this helps!
