Best Answer

The female initiates the rat mating ritual. Female rats attract a male by wiggling their ears and provocatively lifting their butts in the air. Females and males only come together just for mating. The act of breeding only lasts a few seconds, but is repeated for up to 24 hours.

Where do rats have babies?

Rats are a type of mammal, and as such, they reproduce in essentially the same way that other mammals do. Baby rats gestate in their mother's uterus and when they are ready, they come out. The major difference between the birth of rats and the birth of human beings is that rats always have multiple births. They are born in litters. Humans are usually born one at a time.

Can a guinea pig get pregnant by a hamster?

No, hamsters and rats are different species so can't reproduce. I would have thought rats and hamsters would probably fight, as Syrian hamsters are extremely territorial and rats are so much larger than hamsters anyway.

Do rats multiply quickly?

At 15-18 months old, rats average 8 to 10 young per litter and average 5-6 litters per year. In one year, one pair of rats will produce 50-70 offspring that will reach maturity and bear young.

Why wont my parents get me a pet rat?

A rat has sharp teeth and can not only nibble and damage things around in the house but can also bite and injure. Rats are rodents and mature very fast to reproduce with other rats and create problems at home.Rats are vectors for many diseases and therefore not very safe to keep them as pets. Moreover with rats around the house the neighborhood cats may hound your house.

Are rats intelligent enough to smell or taste poison?

Rats have poor eyesight but great hearing and smell. Over decades, rats have adapted to be very wary of humans; rats breed and reproduce at alarming rates, and like birds, are excellent disease carriers, so they have been exterminated and feared by humans for a long time. Even my own pet rat is cautious when I feed him new treats. They are definitely smart enough to learn to avoid poisons and traps. I have even noticed how difficult it was to recapture my rat when he was an adolescent and he escaped. Poisons and traps are still used to rid homes of rats, and they are still effective; however, rats in particular can often cause problems when people need to get rid of wild rats, because of their ability to learn.

Are rats invertebrate?

No, rats are vertebrates. Rats have backbones.

Why are domestic cats so deadly?
