Because they're birds, they have evolved to have feathers so that they can fly. Ducks are specially adapted so that the oil glands in their skin excrete oil which the ducks preen into their feathers, making them waterproof and providing adequate insulation. The feathers create the perfect coat to keep out any water from reaching their skin and seeping in.

Mallards and other ducks (and swans, and geese) migrate yearly. During the winter, they fly south to warmer areas so that they can still live on open water and find food. They fly north again in the springtime.

Duck feathers differ from other bird feathers, and have a smooth design with a special oil on them which allows them to be waterproof ("water off a duck's back") This also helps keep them warm. Duck wing feathers also allow some ducks to fly, and fluffy down feathers under the waterproof layer keep the bird very warm in cold weather.

An adults feathers are naturally greasy, and that keeps the feathers waterproof. A duckling gets slightly waterproof from it's mothers grease when she is sat on it. But duckling feathers are never fully waterproof.

WhAT happens when feather react with water?

When a feather is in the water, it gets wet and absorbs some water. When a feather is still on a duck, the oil secreted by the ducks skin is in the feather and prevents the ducks feathers from getting waterlogged. Otherwise the feathers on the duck would get heavy with water and make it impossible for the duck to stay on top.
