Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1858-May 5, 1919] doesn't give too much information on the Cowardly Lion's appearance in the text. He describes the Lion as having a great roar, quick paws, rapid leaps and bounds, and sharp claws. The illustrations by William Wallace Denslow [May 5, 1856-May 27, 1915] give him a majestic head and mane, manicured tail, and statuesque but streamlined body. At one point or another, his companions - Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Woodman, and the Scarecrow - frolic confidently over his stable back. In terms of personality, he's honest once he gets past his fears. He doesn't hold a grudge, is loyal, and quickly fits in with his four new friends. Perhaps the best example of his team spirit is the frightening incident with the helpers of the Wicked Witch of the West. She sends wolves, crows, black bees, enslaved Winkies, and winged monkeys against the five trespassers on her land. And the Lion is right in the middle of the strategizing.
