The omnivorous red panda (Ailus fulgens, literally "the shining cat") feeds primarily on bamboo, which makes up about two-thirds of it's diet. After waking and cleaning themselves in much the same manner as a house cat, they will patrol their territory by running along the ground or through the trees. They will also forage for roots, acorns, mushrooms, lichens and grasses, as well as pounce upon the occasional fish or insects. Primarily nocturnal, this arboreal mammal has also been observed to be crepuscular.
