Goats are great multi-purpose animals to keep. The females give milk (which is great by itself, but can also be used to make cheeses and soap). There are goats called Cashmere goats which provide the super soft and valuable fiber we pay lots of money for in the forms of sweaters, scarves, gloves, and jackets. Goat meat (chevon) is a very healthy low-cholesterol red meat. Goats browse on brush and weeds and will keep pastures clear. They are smaller and less expensive to keep than cattle (they require far less acreage) and can provide a family with all of the same things a cow can. They make great companion animals for horses. If you have a single horse which might benefit from the company of a buddy, a goat is a far cheaper alternative to getting another horse. They are also great pets. Though they can't be house trained (there is some disagreement with this and I've honestly never tried it), they can be very affectionate with humans. People who hike have trained goats to carry packs. People have trained goats to pull carts. Goats make great 4-H projects for children.
