Read the second book :)
Cole was mad in the beginning because the spirit bear wasnt affraid of him. so he wanted to kill it. the spirit bear was showing self diffence so he attacked cole. Cole realized that he wasnt very important to nature so he kind of changed. Cole saw the spirit bear again while he was almost dead in the forest, he spit at it and the spirit bear licked up his spit. At that point the Spirit bear trusted cole and cole trusted the spirit bear. the spirit bear let cole touch him and they were trusting each other.n the spirit bear walked away but cole does see him again later in the book.
The Spirit Bear teaches Cole the most important lesson that no other person could have taught him. The bear teaches him to be patient and to look at the positive things; anger will only hurt him more. This was taught to Cole because when Cole gets angry and attacks the bear, he almost gets crippled for life, while as when Cole is patient, the bear allows Cole to touch him and Cole feels calm and not afraid.
Cole is either afraid of the spirit bear ( he tries to kill it, people don't kill some thing they're not afraid of. Well then again Cole does have issues.) or he's afraid of being lonely "...the realization that he was alone, totally alone with himself. And it scared him."
Cole kills a small black bear in the book "Touching Spirit Bear".
What changed Cole was the spirit bear after it mauled him.

he expected the bear to be afraid of him, because he thinks everything is afraid of him, when it's actually the other way around
What changed Cole was the spirit bear after it mauled him.
The bear is not scared of Cole
Cole saw a massive white bear (the spirit bear) facing him.
The Spirit Bear is important in the novel "Touching Spirit Bear" because it serves as a symbol of healing, transformation, and forgiveness. It represents the protagonist Cole's journey towards redemption, healing, and understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings. The presence of the Spirit Bear in the story challenges Cole to confront his actions and learn to respect and appreciate the natural world around him.
He doesn't attack him after the first time. Because the first time Spirit Bear attacked him Cole was a threat, later in the book, Cole understands that for Spirit Bear to trust him he can't threaten Spirit Bear.
In "Touching Spirit Bear," Cole is primarily afraid of being alone and confronting his inner demons on the island. The isolation forces him to face his anger, guilt, and the consequences of his violent actions. Additionally, he fears the physical challenges of survival and the presence of the Spirit Bear, which symbolizes his struggle for redemption. Ultimately, these fears serve as a catalyst for his transformation throughout the story.
