Not long. Mentally, a horse starts to stress if breakfast is late. Most horses are preoccupied with food. How much, what kind, when is the next meal. In his natural habitat the horse will graze 18 to 20 hours a day. Stressing over his food will start bad habits, cause ulcers, ect.
Physically, after a missed meal or two, his blood suger may drop just like a human that misses a meal. When his blood sugar drops he won't feel good which can add to his mounting stress over where his person is and where is his meal. After only a couple of days you will be able to see ribs and hip bones much easier. His flanks may sink in a little and his abdomin may draw up along with his crest dropping slightly. The worst though is the look on his face. Those big eyes look so sad but there is always hope that you brought the food. After a couple of days the above signs are more obvious.
