Towards the end of summer, the old queen will lay queen and drone eggs. After they develop into adults they will fly off and mate. The new queens will then find a place to hibernate through the coming winter. As the cold weather comes all other wasps die. In the following spring, the queens come out of hibernation, start new nests, and start new colonies.
As you can see from this, the longest a queen wasp will live is just over a year.
New queen wasps hatch near the end of summer. They go off and mate then find a place to hibernate over the winter. All other wasps, including the old queen die as the cold weather comes. So, at most, a queen lives for about a year.
