We have one living in our lab which is already several months old (Herculeas) but their lifespan apparently varies based on living conditions and societal pressures.
Hope that helps

it takes ants approximitly 18 years to travel that distance. If you don't believe me set an ant free, come back in 18 years to that spot and there will be an ant there with a foreign bride drinking a margerita with an umbrella in it. Don't be to hard on him cuz all that walking probably pissed him off.
Queen ants live up to ten years although other ants live up to 45-60 days. An ant has two stomachs one in which it holds food for itself and the other one which holds food to be shared with other ants. An ant has about 250,000 brain cells in its brain. The outer layering on an ants body is called the exoskeleton. Adults can not swallow solid food of chew it so the rely on squeezed juice from the piece of food. Ants have a formic spray which can get ride of parasites and that is why some birds but ants on there feathers. Ants don't have lungs but they get oxygen from small wholes on there body and they exhale carbon dioxide. Ants produce glycerol in there mouth during the winter so that they don't get frozen.
It is an insectivore which has a long tongue and nose which it uses to lick up ants is anteater.
The ants could survive generations because Carpenter ants can chew through almost anything. Carpenter ants will also eat almost anything, including other ants. It would all depend.
Carpenter ants can live for several years, with queens living the longest. Worker ants typically live for 1-3 years, while queens can live for 10-15 years or more. The lifespan of carpenter ants can be influenced by factors such as food availability and environmental conditions.

If you have a decent amout of ants (20-30) it shoukd take the ants about 3 hours to get a little tunnel going. It will take about a week for ants to form a tunnel to the bottom to the top. In two weeks they will have a little maze! Hope thus helped!
