Best Answer

Horses will nap between late morning and midafternoon, usually standing. Youngsters will lay down often throughout the day. Most horses will lay down at night. However, if pastured in a group, there will almost always be one animal standing 'guard' over it's sleeping mates.

Which animal sleep by standing itself?

Almost all birds routinely sleep standing up (some can even sleep on the wing). Most hoofed animals can sleep or doze standing up, even if they would normally lie down. For very large species, such as elephants, lying down can be dangerous as their internal organs cannot take the pressure for long.

Your friend said that horses only sleep 12 hours a day but you didnt think so How much do horses sleep at night?

Horses can sleep anywhere from a few minutes a day to 12 hours A horse in a herd will sleep much longer and better than a horse on its own, because when a horse is in a herd one horse will always be awake watching for danger. When a horse is on its own it is always woried its going to be eaten by a wolf or a tiger, we know there is none of those in there paddock but they dont. Horses mopstly sleep standing, but also lie down in the sun for a few hours at a time if your horse is lieing down for more than 2-3 hours at a time you should call the vet.

How long should a horse lay on its side?

Not always. However, they generally sleep standing up, as they can lock their legs to stop them falling over. In the wild this is so that predators are less likely to attack, as the horse looks bigger whilst it is standing rather than laying close to the ground. Though in a lot of cases horses do tend to lay down if they are sick. If a horse has Colic, for example, will cause them to get very bad stomach pains, which makes them want to lay down and roll.
