Diffusion will constantly take place. However the net transfer of particles will cease when a concentration equilibrium occurs.

I.e. you have a piece of iron with 0% carbon. you put it into a 20% carbon atmosphere. The carbon will diffuse into the iron until the concentration of carbon is the same in both the iron and the atmosphere. Diffusion will then still occur, but there will be diffusion to the bar and diffusion from the bar at the same rate.

Why is diffusion important to animals?

Diffusion is important to animals because it allows for the movement of molecules such as oxygen and nutrients across cell membranes to where they are needed in the body. This process ensures that cells receive essential resources for metabolic processes and waste products are removed efficiently. Diffusion is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and sustaining cellular functions in animals.

Where does diffusion occur in fish?

Diffusion occurs in fish primarily in their gills, where oxygen from water diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood into the water. This process allows fish to obtain the oxygen they need for respiration and to rid their bodies of waste carbon dioxide.

Where in the human body does simple diffusion occur?

Simple diffusion occurs in various parts of the human body, including the lungs (for gas exchange), the intestines (for nutrient absorption), and the kidneys (for waste filtration). It is a passive process where molecules move across cell membranes down their concentration gradient without the need for a specific protein transporter.

Is diffusion through ion channels a form of active transport?

Facilitated diffusion, or diffusion through ion channels, is not a form of active transport. It is a spontaneous passive transport.

How long does it take for the stonefish to kill?

A sting from a stonefish can be lethal if not treated promptly. Death can occur within hours if an antivenom is not administered. Immediate medical attention is crucial if stung by a stonefish.
