They don't, actually. Cows have it far better than humans do and most pets. They get feed brought to them, hooves trimmed regularly, vaccinated regularly, and the humans taking care of them go out of their way to make a cow that is sick or having trouble calving get and feel better again. And for dairy cows, when they're udders get painfully full they get them relieved by getting them milked out. Dairy cows also get clean straw, sawdust or water beds to sleep on, and feed and water in front of them all the time.

The part that the media sees as cows getting abused is when they're nearing the end of their life, and when they're being loaded into the slaughter facility. But really, they get put out of their misery not soon after, they don't get tortured to death so that they die slow and painful: humans make sure their death is swift and painless.
