They don't have to, but for smaller fish, it ensures greater protection. Schools of fish are a part of what is called "clumped distribution" in which a population is found in high densities. Usually this is because of certain abiotic factors that are concentrated, but in the case of fish, clumped distribution decreases the chance that an individual will become prey.

no, many fish are social and perform the schooling behavior, some fish will actually deteriorate in health and condition if they are not with others of the same species. other fish, are highly territorial. for example, if two red tailed black sharks are in the same tank, they will fight to the death. likewise, corydoras suffer if they are not provided other corydoras in the same tank, even if the corydoras do not school together

No. Some fish, such as several species of shark, prefer to swim alone. This is mainly the predatorial kinds of fish, and the only time they are ever together as during mating season.
