Never. If your rat is getting old and cannot clean himself, you could bathe him, only in very mild lukewarm water, DON'T make him swim if he's old, and avoid the head. I wouldn't bother using soup or shampoo, but if you really must, either find one made for rodents or use a mild kitten shampoo. Rats spend all day either eating, cleaning themselves, sleeping, or playing. They clean themselves i would say 3 timesat least each hour, and clean their entire bodies. ∙ 12y agoYes, but be careful not to get water in their face or ears because they are prone to ear infections. Dont use soap and be sure they can get out of the water if they are scared or feel threatened. Most pet rats arent natural born swimmers so dont risk it, keep the water shallow and watch them closely just in case.
A great alturnative to "rat batheing" is to get a wash cloth of some sort, wet it and wash them yourself. Afterwards dry them off and let em run.(:
