In the wild, Asian elephants are shorter and lighter than they are in captivity.

In the wild, a mature adult bull (male) Asian elephant may weigh up to 10,000 pounds and stand 9-9.5 ft tall at the shoulder. The larger, older, and dominant individuals may weigh as much as 11,000 pounds. A mature adult female may weigh 6,600-7,700 pounds and stand 7-8.3 ft tall at the shoulder, and the older females may weigh as much as 8,600 pounds.

In captivity, they are usually taller and therefore heavier. A bull Asian elephant in captivity may weigh as much as 12,000 pounds and stand around 10 ft tall at the shoulder. Females should weigh 8,000-9,300 pounds and stand 8-8.6 ft tall at the shoulder. Some females may even reach 10,000 pounds in weight.

A bull Asian elephant, Ranchipur, who lives at the San Diego Zoo, weighs over 14,000 pounds. Misty, a female Asian elephant at an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, weighs 10,300 pounds.
