Cottontail rabbits are wild animals. Generally speaking, wild animals should be left alone: they shouldn't be cared for as pets. Pet rabbits have been domesticated over hundreds and hundreds of years, but wild rabbits are used to their wild habitat, and kept as a pet they probably won't be very happy or healthy. Many people find wild baby rabbits and think they've been abandoned, when they actually haven't been. Even if the rabbit is abandoned, or ill or injured, it takes a lot to provide for a wild animal, and unless you know what your'e doing and how to access help, you're probably dooming that rabbit to a short, miserable life. You should put a bottle or bowl in your rabbit's cage. Replace the water every day (or more if you notice that it's empty or covered in hay/debris), and scrub out the bowl or bottle with hot soapy water to get rid of bacteria.

If you notice that your rabbit's not drinking much water, you'll need to encourage her to drink more. Dehydration can lead to illness. Some ideas:

• Some rabbits prefer a bowl to a bottle, or vice versa. If you can only use own, give your rabbit what it wants.
• If possible, give the rabbit variety and choice: a bowl and a bottle!
• Put a pile of hay by the water dish (rabbits that eat more hay tend to drink more water)
• Make sure the water is fresh: replace it daily
• Make sure the dish is clean: wash it daily with soap and water. If you use a bottle, use a bottle brush and a mini bottle brush for the drinking spout (you can find these at pet stores)
• Really drench your rabbit's greens (her daily salad) -- that way the water will end up drinking water while eating her greens
