I have my kids clean their small animal's cages weekly. I use a shoe-box-sized Rubbermaid plastic container to store all of the cage cleaning supplies, including a couple pairs of rubber gloves, a scrub brush, spare water bottles and a spare exercise wheel.
While we clean the cages, the plastic container serves as a temporary cage. Be sure to snap the lid down tight because the lids are light weight and even a mouse can push her way out if you don't snap the lid down. Don't worry, she will not be in the temporary cage long enough to use up all the air.
We dump the used litter in the compost pile. We use a shop vacuum to clean out any remaining litter and then add a gallon or so of hot soapy water to the cage. We use a nylon "dish scrubber" brush to scrub down the sides and bottom of the cage, along with the food bowl, exercise wheel, and any other pet toys. Rinse out the cage and the other items and then wipe them dry with an old towel.
We add a tiny dab of Vaseline to the pivot points on the exercise wheels so they don't squeak.
We keep a couple of spare water bottles on hand, so when we clean the cages, we swap a clean one for the dirty one. Then we rinse the dirty one and run it through the dishwasher so it's ready for the next time. If you don't have a spare water bottle, do be sure to rinse it well with hot water and maybe use a test-tube brush to get it good and clean inside too.
Replenish the litter. We add enough to make it at least 2" deep for mice and gerbils, and about 4" deep for our hamsters.
Return your pets to their cages and be sure to clean up your work area. Vacuum up any spilled litter and clean up the temporary cage. Return all the cleaning items to their proper storage space.
Don't forget to replenish your pet's food supply and water.
