Kittens need to stay with their litter-mates and mother until they are 12 weeks old. This gives them the time needed to learn vital socialisation skills to allow them to grow up into well-behaved adults. They start to learn these skills around 6 to 8 weeks old and will continue learning them until 12 weeks. Separating a kitten during this time can cause behavioral problems when it is older.

Keeping kittens together with their mother also allows them to naturally wean off the mother's milk without rushing, and to also learn how to use the litter tray correctly.
