A dog is never too old to be spayed. The risks involved in administering anesthesia begin to sharply increase around age 6 years. Even then, as long as a dog is healthy, spaying is far less risky than having a litter. Dogs don't go through menapause, and they can have litters throughout their mature lives. If you have a dog that's over 6 years old and you want to have her spayed, the veterinarian can do blood test and check her out to minimize her risks. As a spay/neuter activist, I've seen "outside", neglected dogs up to 13 years old get spayed after having an unwanted litter and do well. The concern for older dogs is pyometra--a very common uterine infection which can be life-threatening. Also, other risks for intact older dogs include uterine and ovarian cancer.
