Really smart, for their brain size. The squirrels in our backyard are really smart because they steal our stuff like spoons. They also look us straight in the eyes when we feed them from our porch, a sign of intelligence, and they don't always come up to us for food. Sometimes they just come and look at us and we feed them peanuts, but they don't eat them. They don't treat us as some food dispenser, though they threaten us sometimes if we don't feed them, by climbing up the screen, or digging in the flowers on our deck. That's intelligence to me.
Don't you realize "smart" is totally relative? MANY levels of "smartness." Can they protect themselves, find food, and survive- obviously. Can they solve a math equation--obviously not. They are smart for what they need to be smart at, it's called evolution.
No. Where the grey and red squirrels intermingle, the red squirrels tend to be pushed out by the larger greys.

Not generally. By and large, fox squirrels remain "red," black squirrels remain sable, and gray squirrels remain gray no matter what the season.
