The longest wild saltwater crocodile actually MEASURED snout to tail was 6.1 meters (a tad over 20 feet) in length, although due to the shrinkage of the skin it was likely closer to 21 feet. This crocodile drowned in a fishing net in the Fly River of Papua New Guinea in 1980. There have been no other VERIFIABLE records of saltwater crocodiles over 20 feet in length in the wild. Another specimen accurately measured to around 20 feet was killed in the Mary River of Australia's Northern Territory in the 1980's I believe. Guinness had previously accepted a claim of a 23 foot (7 meter) saltwater crocodile from Bhitarkanika National Park in the Orissa state of India....but this was based on a purely visual observation (not even a crocodilian expert's visual observation) and is thus unverified. Over-exaggeration is extremely common when viewing crocodiles, particularly very thick & healthy individuals that may appears longer due to their increased girth. It is definitely possible (perhaps even probable) that 23 foot saltwater crocodiles exist (or did exist) but anything larger than that appears unlikely...as even 6 meter crocodiles are like 7 foot humans- not common. The story of 28 foot saltwater crocodile from Normanton in Queensland is often cited as proof but, despite being used so many times, has no proof to verify the claim. The maximum length of a pure saltwater crocodile is probably around 23 feet...maybe even a "tad" larger, but we don't know for sure. Hybrids between the saltwater crocodile and Siamese crocodile occur in captivity and often result in "hyrbid vigor" and this has resulted in the presence of many 20 foot hybrids in zoos around the world, the largest being "Yai" a captive saltie/Siamese hybrid in a Bangkok zoo nearly 21 feet in length. Historically both saltwater crocodiles and Siamese crocodiles were present in the wild alongside each other in countries like Cambodia and Vietnam and it is likely wild hybridization occurred, meaning it is likely some of these giants may have once existed in the wilds of Indochina. The maximum size of a saltie/Siamese hybrid is unknown, but they appear to reach 20 feet much more frequently than pure saltwater crocodiles. Either way, it appears unlikely they would reach over 25 feet in length. Other large crocodilian species include the Nile crocodile of Africa (largest OFFICIAL measurement was just over 18 feet in length,) the American crocodile of Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and the southern tip of Florida (largest OFFICIAL measurement is nearly 18 feet,) the Orinoco crocodile of Venezuela (largest nearly 18 feet,) the Tomistoma (largest nearly 18 feet,) and the Indian gharial (largest nearly 20 feet.) Caiman and alligators are generally smaller, with the largest official measurements being 5 meters (16.5 feet) for a black caiman and around 14.5 feet for an American alligator (stories of 19 foot alligators are as ridiculous as stories of 30 foot saltwater crocodiles.)
