We have these in our yard. We believe they are either mining bees or sweat bees. Ours have bright green (not metallic green)_ heads, and abdomens that resemble a honey bee or yellow jacket. They live in the ground as specified in the answer, and are not aggressive. Very good pollinators - seen carrying large loads of pollen into burrows. - Larry Hewitt; Centralia, WA

Why would rhubarb leaves turn red?

Perhaps crown root rot? If so your plant should be discarded and start a new plant in another location in disease free soil. Rhubarb does best in a soil with lots of organic matter (composted manure) but needs to be well drained. Try planting your rhubarb in mounded soil. If the roots get too wet and stay that way too long, you will get rot -- a fungal disease.
