Dogs understand tone of voice, but not the words. If you discipline a dog, it has to be at the SAME TIME as it performs the bad behavior, otherwise it will not make the connection. Scold or lightly spank the dog when it disobeys or otherwise messes up. It will learn to avoid your disapproval almost as children do.
