An arthropod is an invertebrate having jointed limbs and a segmented body with an exoskeleton made of chitin. Arthropods form the largest group of invertebrates.

All insects are arthropods. So are Spiders, ticks, mites, centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, horshoe crabs, and all crustaceans.

Most arthropods display five distinct characteristics including; bilateral(left/right) symmetry, hard exoskeleton, jointed legs, segmented body, and many pairs of limbs. Examples of an arthropod would be a moth, scorpion, millipede, lobster, spider and beetle.

Neither. Insects are a type of arthropod and bugs (at least by the scientific definition) are a type of insect.
