Why would your cat kill and eat her kittens when they were about 2 weeks?

Some mother cats do this for many reasons, sometimes it's because the kittens are ill/deformed... or if someone has been handling the kittens and then the mother can smell their scent on them In both cases it is natural instinct. If the mother cat smells quite different scent in her kittens, she may think kill them for protection. If the kittens are ill/deformed, she also eats them before they die and bring diseases to the rest of kittens. Also dying kittens or dead kitten corpse marks the smell for the predators to notice where she lives.

Do cats kill the newborn kittens if they go in heat gain?

A cat won't go into heat if she's nursing. If a male cat sees a female cat with kittens he will probably kill all the kittens to force the female into heat. (Siamese cats don't do this, nor do males who live in catteries.) IT is hello

What about care of mother and kittens after kittens are born?

just leave the mother and the kittens leave fresh water and food out for her. don't touch the kittens until the kittens can walk at least or if the mother cat trusts you and doesn't get mad and start hissing, you can probably play with the kittens at an earlier time. When the kittens get older only leave water and they will start to drink it. Never give milk to kittens when they are still small because they sometimes have an allergic reaction that could possibly kill them. hope this helps.

Will mother cats take care of their kittens if touched by humans?

The real question is, is the cat yours? Are you close to the cat, and does she trust you. She will NOT kill the kitten, but she may bite or scratch you if sh is not familiar with you. She will allow people she is close to to handle the kittens from the day they are born. Unless you are sure the cat is close to you (emotionally) than the best advice is to give the mama cat and her new babies some space.

How old should kittens be before leaving mother?

Kittens should stay with their Mom until at least 10 weeks, thoroughly weaned. They learn all their skills from Momma Cat so never feel the rush to take them from the mother, as this can lead to serious problems for the kittens in later life.

Will a mother cat kill one of her kittens if she knows it has something wrong and it is dying anyway?

No, this will not happen. There are only a few, firmly defined, instances where the mother cat's instincts tell her to abandon or drive away her own kittens. How a mother cat treats her kittens is a function of what stage her hormones are in following the birth, combined with her environmental cues. If there are conditions of stress. the mother will drive away her kittens as they grow, so they can establish their own hunting territories. If there is something wrong with one of the kittens, the mother will abandon them so a doomed kitten will not use up resources that will not help them.

Are kittens a predator or a prey?

Yes. Kittens hunt and kill bugs, and will also hunt mice while being instructed in that skill by their mother cat. When they are doing that, they are predators. Larger carnivores, such as dogs, hawks, and rats, will hunt and kill kittens. When that is going on, they are prey.

Why do raccoons kill their babies?

This would be very rare. Perhaps the mother is not experienced with the care of babies, she is stressed, she is sick or the babies have defects that will not allow them to survive in the wild.

Do Yorkshire terriers kill kittens?

No, Yorkshire Terriers do not kill kittens.

Do cats look after their young?

A mother cat provides her kittens with food, protection and warmth. Newborn kittens are born deaf, blind, toothless and unable to stand and remain so for the first week or two of their lives. Once the kittens find their feet, they will start to play and explore their surroundings, but will stay close to their mother. Kittens will often run to their mother's side if she calls. Wild, and even domestic cats will move her kittens elsewhere if she feels the nest is not safe, or feels she does not want to draw attention to potential predators who would otherwise pick up the scent of the kittens. When the kittens are around six weeks old, they will start to take interest in their mother's food. The mother will often bring soft cat food, or if in the wild, dead prey to her offspring to eat. In a wild environment, a mother cat will eventually bring alive animals to her kittens so they can learn and practise how to hunt and kill for themselves.

What does a dad cat do in the family?

Usually nothing... Other cats, particularly males, will kill kittens to allow the mother cat to comeback into heat, & to remove competition. But, some male cats do help with kittens, defending & even bringing food to the mother cat, which in turn, allows her to feed the kittens. This doesn't happen very often, however.
