3 per Horse.

Pregnant mares should have a full set of vaccinations when they are bred. They then receive Pneumabort K vaccinations at 3, 5, 7, and 9 months, and a month before delivery they should receive their full set of booster shots. Additional vaccinations may be necessary, including additional boosters of West Nile, strangles and other needed vaccines for the area.

The exact answer is going to depend on what area of the world the mare is in. In the United States, a mare should be current on the vaccines which the American Association of Equine Practioners considers to be "core vaccinations" during pregnancy: Eastern and Western Equine Encephalytis, West Nile Virus, Tetanus and Rabies. It is also recommended that they be vaccinated against Equine Herpes Virus at 3, 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation as this virus can cause abortions. Vaccination against Influenza, Strangles and other possible infectious disease may also be recommended based upon the risks to the specific mare. Boostering for these diseases is also recommended about 1 month prior to foaling to help ensure the highest level of maternal antibodies get transferred to the foal through the colostrum. For vaccination recommendations for each specific situation, horse owners should contact their veterinarian prior to breeding their mare as there may be increased risk of contracting infectious disease during the actual breeding.

Pregnant Mare Rhino Vaccination ( 5th month )

Pregnant Mare Rhino Vaccination ( 7th month )

Pregnant Mare Rhino Vaccination ( 9th month )

All other vaccines should be give within 45 days of foaling to provide high levels of antibodies in colostrum.

The mare should be wormed approximately 10 to 11 days before foaling.

Pregnant mares normally get their standard "spring" vaccinations 30 days before foaling to insure their colostrum has high levels of antibodies.

Pregnant mares also often receive vaccinations at 5,7 and 9 months to prevent

abortion due to rhino infections

Open mares should be vaccinated before breeding in the spring or after breeding/confirmed pregnancy is at least 35days post ovulation (to avoid inadvertently ending the pregnancy by causing prostiglandin release that affects the CL)...and ideally after they are 60 days pregnant (to insure that organogenesis is complete).

The answer to this depends on the stage of the mare's pregnancy. Any procedure that can cause inflammation during early pregnancy (a less than 35 day old conceptus) can cause a prostiglandin release which could compromise the pregnancy.

Mares are often vaccinated at 5, 7, 9 months gestation and 30 days prefoaling with

no negative effects to their pregnancies.

Which bedding is best to use when your mare is due to foal?

Straw is usually the recommended bedding for a mare during the foaling period. Straw will not stick to the wet foal and placenta like shavings. The problem with straw is the mare might eat it. This could lead to colic. Be sure the mare has access to free choice good quality hay to decrease the chance of her eating the straw. Consuming straw is thought to be one of the causes of colic in mares following foaling. The straw should be clean, not moldy, free from dust and soft. If the mare insists on eating the straw, shavings may be safer. The best place for a mare to foal is in a large grassy pasture surrounded by safe fences and cleared of all unsafe objects.
