Only females can sting, as the barb is found in the same part that lays the eggs.

The easiest way to tell male and female wasps apart is to look at their antennae - female wasps have shorter antennae. A good way to tell is whether the antennae hang close the the ground when the wasp is on a flat surface. This would be a male, and therefore not capable of stinging.

There are actually three castes of bumble bee: queen, drone and worker. The queen is the largest of the three, about 30 to 50 per cent larger than the drones and workers.
The drones are the males, and the workers are all sterile females.
