Lop ear rabbits can be vocal, just like other rabbit breeds. They may make sounds such as grunts, purrs, or thumps to communicate with their owners or other rabbits. However, the level of vocalization can vary from rabbit to rabbit.
It either means your rabbit came from a breeder or that it was once shown. Many breeders will tattoo the ears to show where the rabbit came from. If your rabbit was once shown, it will have a tattoo on the inside of the right ear because that is required for show.
Use a small amount of Hydrogen Peroxide on a Q-tip swab. Clean the canker, allow the peroxide to bubble. Do not pour this into ear, a small dab only applied with a swab. This will kill off bacteria and will not harm the rabbit.
Assuming that the rabbit is not a lop earred breed, one may assume that the rabbit has damage to the cartilage in it's ear. OR, if summer time, because of extreme heat the rabbit's ears grow faster than the babies do the cartilage is not strong enough to hold up the heavy ears. In some cases the rabbit will grow into it's ears but some may remain damaged for life
Signs of illness in a lop ear rabbit can include lack of appetite, changes in stool quality, lethargy, and unusual sitting or posturing. Lop ear rabbits can experience stomach aches, which may manifest as hunched posture, teeth grinding, or reduced activity. If your rabbit is too weak to move, it is urgent to seek veterinary care as this could indicate a serious health issue that needs immediate attention.
If a bunny's ear is flaky then that might be a sign of ear mites. If a bunny has ear mites the ear will often be matted. Go to a local vet that treats rabbits to get the best results.
