Adult female cats are more territorial than adult male cats, but, if two cats of any gender (2 males, 2 females, or 1 male and 1 female) are raised together, they will almost always get along. As long as they are brought together when they are kittens, and raised together, they will get along just fine.

In fact, even an adult cat and a kitten will usually get along just fine. The adult cat might hiss at the kitten, or swat at the kitten with its paws, but it will not do any serious damage to the kitten. Unless the cat is completely deranged/crazy, it can sense that the kitten is only a baby, and it won't hurt it.

Bringing two adult cats together is what can be problematic. Usually, if two adult cats are strangers to each other (have never lived together), they will not get along. Regardless of their gender.

It depends on how friendly your first dog is and how well it reacts to other dogs. Try taking it to the pet store or a park to gauge its reaction. It also depends on how much money and work you are willing to put into being a pet owner, because two dogs mean twice the food to buy, twice the walking, twice the baths, and twice the little surprises they leave for you. On the other hand, if your two dogs get along well, and you are willing to put in the money and work, getting another dog is an excellent option! I personally think that two dogs are better than one, because it's always fun to take both of them outside to play. Two might also be a good choice if you live alone or are retired.
