Generally speaking, the ants in the colony are all females except for the winged workers, or "drones", they are males. The only other winged ant in the colony would be a recent queen, who hasn't removed her wings yet, or a female that hasn't mated yet. Most of the time the females are somewhat larger than the males. The fine details can be slightly different with some species, but for most ants, these general facts hold true. For more details, please see the sites listed below.

Ants are male or female:

  • male ants are a small number in a given colony;
  • female ants are the majority members in a given colony.

Female ants fall into three categories:

  • queen, a fertile female whose function is to produce eggs;
  • worker, an infertile female whose function is to care for the eggs produced and nurture the young of the nest;
  • soldier, an infertile female whose function is to protect the nest.
