Sometimes they will sell these in horse mail-order catalogs. Usually ones that cater to western riding. Also, look in the back of horse magazines and monthly horse publications that are free at most local feed and tack stores.
An exhibition run at a barrel race is when a rider pays a fee to have a practice run around the barrels without being in competition for prizes. It is often done to help a horse gain experience or to allow a rider to practice before entering a competitive race.
Barrel racing as a competitive sport is believed to have originated in the early 1930s in the United States in response to the growing popularity of rodeo events. The first recorded barrel race took place in 1948 at Cow Palace in San Francisco, California.
Seconds to milliseconds it all depends. The distance between the barrels has to be consistent with the size of the arena where the contest is held. So long as the barrels are spaced 18 feet from the rails, the rest depends on maneuver space for the horse, and stopping distance in the end from #3 barrel. This type of measurement is called "scale" The size of the arena will determine the size of the course. This distance is "unknown" to the rider and makes for a more competitive contest. (it wouldn't be a good contest if the trainers and riders know and train for a set distance!) After they establish the course, using the 18 foot from the rail rule, if the arena is too small, they will adjust the barrels in five yard increments until the rule is met. If the arena is large, then the rule is used, but the barrels will be farther apart. Then during the course of the contest, the best time to win is calculated from the fastest to the slowest for each rider/horse. There are three runs and the best average time wins. (the times from all the runs by a horse are added together, then divided by three, and the total of this is the "average time" )
Just about any type of horse can be trained to do barrel racing. Some horses are just naturally better at it then other horses. Usually you want a horse that is fast and can turn fast. Alot of people use QH and paints. I have Ridden a mustang and a paint in barrel racing and they both did very well.
A Thoroughbred horse can most definitely Barrel Race. Mostly any horse can! If anything, this horse breed can be great a barrel racing because of its speed and flexibility. Have Fun!
Quarter Horses are the best horse to do barrels.

The plural form of barrel is barrels.
Barrel racing is a rodeo event that involves you, your horse, and 3 barrels. It is a timed event. There are 3 barrels in the shape of a clover leaf. As you run in you go to the right side and turn the first barrel (but you can also go the other way and start at your left). Then you run to the second barrel and turn that then you are on your way to the 3rd and last barrel. as soon as you are done with that, you race home as fast as you and your horse can and to try and beat the clock. Barrel Racing is a very fun, but competitive sport. Some people think that to be a Barrel Racer you have to have an expensive horse but all you need is being able to enjoy such a fun and addicting sport!
Yes, barrel racing was a sport designed for women. Considering we couldn't ride the bulls or the broncs, Women got together and designed a rodeo sport just for us. Now, though, men can run the barrels as well.
