A large quantity of gametes can be fertilized at one time, possibly leading to a larger number of offspring. Furthermore, external fertilization ensures the wide dispersal of offspring (by the ocean currents), thus resulting in less competition for resources such as food and living space.

1) Organisms that reproduce externally produce a lot more offspring compared to internal fertilization, for example frogs reproduce externally and the female releases up to thousands of eggs while humans release only one egg from the ovary to be fertilized. 2) Reproducing externally is faster and requires less dependency on the parents for they are not physically attached to the parents.

The advantage of fertilizing eggs outside the body is the ease in which it can be accomplished. Parents can simply deposit large quantities of eggs to help ensure the growth of future generations.
