Leghorns are a very early maturing breed and will start to lay eggs anytime after 16 weeks of age. They are one of the most popular breeds around the world and will lay pearl white medium to large size eggs in great abundance. The leghorn is known by the nickname "The ultimate egg machine". They are not very human friendly and are prone to be nervous and noisy even when roosting. Not a good city chicken if you have sleepy neighbours.

Female chickens (hens) generally start laying eggs at around 20-24 weeks of age. Some breeds take longer. They don't need a rooster to lay eggs and if you are lucky they will lay an egg per day. Again this depends on the breed, with some chickens laying an egg every few days. They lay less over winter, when they are moulting or when they are stressed.
