That is actually a more complicated question today. Historically, the answer was easy: it was believed that the dog was "man's best friend." Dogs were not only companions and playmates; because they were loyal and intelligent, some breeds could be trained to guide blind people.

However, these days, there are other animals that have been trained to help people with disabilities. One good example is capuchin monkeys, which are trained to do a wide range of tasks (fetching food from the refrigerator, answering the door, turning the pages of a book) for people who are paralyzed. But despite the other animals and their skills, it is undoubtedly true that when most people think of a pet which is a best friend and a helper, they think of dogs.
